sir,
In accordance with your orders of 26th instant, I
proceeded at 7,45 a.m. on the 27th., with the "Janus" and
"Handy" to search for junks supposed to be in distress to the South-Westward of Hongkong.
They were reported to have been seen dismasted and
anchored on the 22nd instant in a position 50 miles S 200 W of
Gap Rock.
I considered that any drift in the interval must have
been in a Westerly to Nor'Westerly direction and searched
accordingly.
The attached chart shows the tracke of the three
vessels. It had been my intention to spread on the line A B at
day light on 28th. and then steer for Gap Rock, but owing to
the breakdown of "Janus" from loss of water I had to return to
her & send the "Handy" on by herself as shown on track chart.
•
Nothing has been seen of any of the junks searched for.
It is presumed that all had managed to make the land or been
lost in the gale of the 25th.
If there had been any number of them they must have
been scattered before we reached the scene, and therefore some
BIGBAN.
